This piece, completed over Memorial Day Weekend alongside my father, is both personal and universal. The image is of my cousin Josh, who we lost unexpectedly in August 2022. An ardent and accomplished musician of many instruments, he was an open-minded, generous, unique, and lovely soul who created safe spaces all around him. The piece seeks to inspire these qualities in everyone so that even without knowing him personally, his Free Spirit might transcend beyond his life into ours.

The complete I Madonnari Print Collection project was made possible by the Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts, through the generous support of an FY24 Cycle A Project Grant for Artists. The large-scale pastel images featured were each created on asphalt or driveways from 2019 to 2023 for the renowned annual Santa Barbara festival. Each drawing took me and my teams 2-3 days to complete, and they lasted until they weathered away. By making prints, I can now offer a new experience of this powerful, temporal art form to you and those you share it with.

In honor of Josh’s memory, a portion of the proceeds from this print will benefit Collage, a non-profit offering one-room concerts and supporting programs to provide musical instruments to high school students in his hometown, San Pedro, California.
